From Hardwood to Tiles: Choosing the Perfect Flooring for Your Living Space
When doing any home project, one of the most important decisions you will make is choosing the floor. Flooring can make a big difference in the overall design of your space, but with so many different options available, it is important to understand the differences between the different types of flooring.
In the post, we will go into the unique characteristics of three popular types of floors to help you make the best decision for your home project!
Hardwood
Hardwood floors have been a popular flooring choice for hundreds of years and bring a sense of elegance and warmth to any home. This flooring not only brings a timeless look to your space, but it is also durable and adds value to your home. Hardwood floors come in a variety of wood species, offering many different color choices to match any aesthetic. They can also be finished multiple times, allowing them to keep their shine.
We used white oak hardwood floors throughout the main living spaces of our home, and I absolutely love the warmth they bring to each room! For the most part, the coloring is consistent, but it also has a bit of character that gives it a timeless look.
The great thing about hardwood floors is that they can last for decades. It is important to note though, that hardwood floors are more susceptible to scratches and water damage than other types of flooring, so we use rugs and furniture pads to prevent any scratches. We also make sure we quickly clean up any spills or messes to prevent any discoloration or damage.
Hardwood floors also tend to be more costly upfront than other types of flooring. This can vary based on the type of wood, grade, finish, and installation of the wood. Keep in mind though that hardwood floors do significantly add to the value of your home in the long run.
Laminate
Laminate flooring has become more popular over the last couple of years because of its ability to mimic hardwood flooring while also being more durable and affordable. Unlike hardwood, laminate is resistant to scratches making it a great choice for homes with pets or children. Laminate flooring comes in a wide range of designs and colors, making it easy to find an option that matches the aesthetic of your home. Laminate is also low maintenance, and regular sweeping and occasional mopping are recommended to keep this product looking in great shape.
Although laminate is scratch resistant, unlike hardwood, it is also susceptible to moisture. Spills should be cleaned up quickly and this flooring should be avoided in rooms with high humidity. Laminate flooring cannot be sanded, so if a piece is damaged, it may need to be replaced.
One other thing to keep in mind when considering laminate floors, is that one box often of laminate contains a variety of shades and colors of a design. This means that one piece of flooring may not be an accurate sample of the overall look the box will contain. In order to make the best decision on which laminate flooring is right for you, it is important to search for photos or examples of the same material in large spaces or rooms.
Tile Floor
Tile flooring is a versatile product that comes in many different designs and styles. It comes in a variety of materials like ceramic, porcelain, and stone. Tile is also incredibly durable and resistant to stains and scratches as well as water damage. These floors are low maintenance compared to other types of flooring materials and are also resistant to allergens.
Although tile floors are extremely durable, they are harder than other types of flooring. During colder months they can also feel cold and not as comfortable to walk on as other options. Grout lines between the tiles can also become stained over time, although regular cleaning does help prevent discoloration.
It is also important to note that when choosing a tile that mimics the look of wood, grout lines can widen or crack over time. Changes in humidity and temperature can cause slight movements to tile, which means that the grout may need to be touched up from time to time in addition to regular cleaning to keep it looking fresh and new.
Choosing the right tile for your space can be a challenge. It is important to take into consideration the function of your space, budget, and personal preferences. Understanding the characteristics of the different types of flooring will help you to choose the product that not only fits your design aesthetic, but is also functional for you and your family.
