Artistry Behind Zellige Tile
Zellige tile has a rich history that dates back centuries. Originating in Morocco, this traditional form of mosaic tile work is deeply rooted in Islamic art and architecture. Its name “zellige,” comes from the Arabic word for “tile,” highlighting its integral role in Moroccan design.
The process of making zellige tile is labor-intensive and highly skilled. Each tile is individually hand-cut, shaped, glazed and fired. This meticulous craftsmanship ensures that every piece is unique, with slight variations in color, surface texture, and shape.
Today, zellige tile has gained popularity worldwide for its beauty and hand-crafted design. We choose zellige tile for the kitchen in the Transitional Remodel Project because its distinctive charm adds a touch of elegance this modern interior and creates a captivating space that evokes a sense of artistry.
Embracing Imperfections
Since zellige tile is handcrafted by artisans which means that they are delicate and can come with an array of imperfections that add to the beauty of the material! However, it is recommended that you order 15%-20% more material than needed in due to chips that could be found in the tile.
Sorting Through Shades
Part of the beauty of zellige tile is the variety of color shades that create an eclectic and timeless design. In order ensure visual harmony, the tile from the various boxes must be mixed and matched. This is a process that will take time but results in a stunning and exquisite space!
If you are able, you can even lay out your tiles before install to ensure the design is to your liking.
Time For Install
The process of installing zellige tile is slightly different than your typical tile install, so make sure your contractor is experienced and understands the process. It may also be necessary to clear away any dust on the tiles from shipping. Tiles can be soaked in water for a brief period of time to remove any debris.
Traditional 4’’X4’’ zellige tiles are laid side by side with a layer of grout added to the thin space between them. A thin line of grout is also typically added between installing other shapes of zellige tile. However, if you would like a thicker grout line, larger spacers can be used when installing the tile.
When selecting a grout color, consider using a shade that is as close to the color of the tile as possible to help the blend the imperfections found in the tiles.
